NARRE Warren swimmer Lachlan Mitchell has traded in his Speedos and goggles for a stopwatch and textbooks, as he embarks on sport science and swim coaching careers.
The high-achieving 18yearold made strong impressions in and out of the pool during an eight-year stint with the Monbulk Aquatic Club.
Mitchell's 34 club records are matched by his passion and drive to develop young swimmers.
Mitchell is as proficient in his studies as he is in backstroke: he's a full scholarship holder at Bond University on the Gold Coast, studying for a bachelor of sports science degree.
"I want to help elite athletes get better by analysing and developing their skills," he said.
Mitchell continues to coach junior and masters swimming squads, as well as supporting the senior coach with elite-level swimmers.
"It's different being out of the pool - I spent so long in it. I enjoy the teaching aspect, and being able to pass on my own experiences."
Bond University vice-chancellor Professor Robert Stable said Mitchell exemplified the commitment and focus shown by the university's scholarship holders.
"The rigorous application process is based on academic performance, leadership skills, co-curricular activities and a demonstrated commitment to community service," he said. "Lachlan ticks all these boxes."
Mitchell was also nominated as a Young Australian of the Year in 2009.
