CASEY Comets soared to a 3-0 win over Doncaster Rovers in the Football Federation Victoria State League division 2 south east competition last Saturday.
The Comets made a surprise choice in selection, with Anthony Ciccarelli taking up a position in the midfield and his brother Stefan Ciccarelli in the centre of defence.
The Comets started well and in the 14th minute Liam Ryan gave the home team the lead when he outpaced the Rovers' defence, angling a superb shot past keeper Matt Davoli from 20 metres out.
It was a classic finish from Ryan, who has had an up-and-down season with a knee injury since returning from Premier League team Richmond.
The Comets stepped up a gear with Tony Saunders dictating in midfield and Brendan Elmazovski finding space to keep the visitors pinned in their own half.
Their pressure paid off when in the 28th minute Paul Presti sneaked into the box and rounded the keeper to score, taking the lead to 2-0.
The second half proved to be harder for the Casey team as the Rovers tightened up in the middle of the park but did not look like venturing forward to put pressure on keeper Ashley Hupe in the Comets' goal.
Midway through the second half Presti again proved his worth and made it 10 goals in 10 games when he got on to a Ciccarelli clearance, drawing keeper Davoli off his line and guiding home a shot from an acute angle to kill off the visitors' comeback chances.
The late introduction of Comets substitutes Dean Ventieri, Henry Nagus and David Terek created a lot of forward movement but no more goals.
Leigh Wilkinson came close with a great header from a Adam Ventieri corner but that was the end of the scoring chances.
The Comets' reserves had fine 2-1 win and Frankie Benkovic from the under-18s got a run off the bench to cap off a good year in the junior ranks.
A couple of first-half goals from Mustafa Nader made it hard for the visitors. Even though they pulled one back from a controversial penalty decision, the Comets were always in control thanks to fine performances from Luke Presti, captain Gerard Lawler and Christian Raffa.
This week the Comets travel to face Diamond Valley.
