CASEY-South Melbourne's Premier Cricket clash against Ringwood is delicately poised, with the Rams requiring a further 166 runs for victory.
In overcast and gloomy conditions on Saturday the Swans were bowled out for 240 with skipper Jake Best top-scoring with 84 off 141 balls.
It follows on from Best's season high of 96 not out last week, an innings which appears to have kick-started his season.
The Swans were boosted by the return of favourite son Damien Wright from his coaching duties with New Zealand, with the veteran quick in town to work with Big Bash League team Melbourne Stars.
Wright's Stars teammate Jade Durnbach also made a one-off appearance for the Swans, with the Surrey paceman having an immediate impact.
But former Australian player Wright was dismissed without scoring with the Swans floundering at 7-176 on a pitch where 300-plus was not out of the question.
Jayde Herrick (19), Shane Maggs (23) and Durnbach (31) were left to rescue their team from an impending disaster.
"It was a bit disappointing, 240 probably wasn't enough. We were out just after tea and if we had kept a few more wickets, we were probably on track to make 350 or 380," Swans coach Mark Ridgway said.
"They bowled OK but we just didn't bat as smart as we could have."
Ridgway said there was no magic formula for Best's form reversal. "He's just become more patient and is watching the ball closer.
"Cricket is an easy game and sometimes bowlers can find it hard to get you out when you watch the ball and play straight," he said. "He's being a bit more selective with his shots."
In reply Ringwood is 3-74 and has Gavin Kellar (20) and Joe Loorham (0 not out) at the crease, with the latter facing just one ball.
Herrick (1-34) was dangerous with the new ball while his opening ball partner Durnbach (1-24) also impressed.
Wright (0-12) and Durnbach are not available for the second day of play, with the Swans set to bring Rod Bird and Ash Perera back into the line-up.
"They were both available yesterday but not any more," Ridgway said. "It was just good to get them involved - it's not often these young blokes get the opportunity to play with guys like that."
Young all-rounder Clive Rose (1-4) snared the other wicket and is likely to bowl plenty of overs when the match resumes this Saturday.
Ringwood posted 254 in the seconds match with the Swans 2-48 in reply with a full day's play to push for victory.
In the thirds Casey-South Melbourne made a respectable 205.
