WATCH Krystal-Elise Stevens with her old dog Genevieve and you can't help thinking she was born to work with animals.
Which is exactly what Ms Stevens would like to do - if someone would give her a chance.
The Cranbourne North resident completed a certificate in companion animal services at Box Hill Institute of TAFE in 2010 but has been unable to secure a work experience placement or volunteer position in the year since then.
She has had more than 15 interviews but on each occasion has been knocked back. She said clinics have told her they did not have insurance for work experience or volunteer placements or that she did not have enough animal-related experience.
Ms Stevens has a genetic condition called 18p deletion, which is characterised by short stature - she is 144 centimetres - poor balance and mild anxiety.
The condition does not affect intelligence or ability to learn, as evidenced by her progress so far, but she is better suited to practical then theoretical learning.
"I have to be shown and have it explained but then I retain it for future reference."
She has worked part-time in a Bunnings store for three years and wants to continue her studies but needs clinical experience before she can enrol in the next stage of her course.
"I'm a hard worker and have a passion for animals and their welfare. I'm very useful - I just wish people could see that."
