A pall of smoke blew over Lynbrook and Cranbourne on Wednesday as fire crews battled to control a grass fire near the Lyndhurst tip.
The fire started about 3pm in tall grass in Glasscocks Road.
At one stage there were 16-18 fire vehicles and two firefighting helicopters battling it.
The fire came within about 200 metres of gas lines running along the Western Port Highway before the wind changed from south-westerly to south-easterly and averted the danger.
Roads around the area were closed and residents were told not to try to return to the area until the fire was brought under control about 5.30pm.
