The grassfire burnt out about five hectares and affected residents along Glasscocks Road, Taylors Road and Western Port Highway, the CFA said.
Smoke also affected Dandenong South, Lyndhurst and Bangholme.
Fire crews battled to control the fire, which came within about 200 metres of the gas lines before the wind changed from south-westerly to south-easterly and averted the danger.
The fire started in Glasscocks Road about 3pm.
At one stage there were 16-18 fire vehicles on the site and two firefighting helicopters.
Roads around the area were closed, with Abbotts Road gridlocked, and residents were told not to try to return to the area.
The firefront was several hundred metres wide at one stage. The flames were two to three metres high in grass at least a metre high.
Jayco workers who had been watching from a safe distance were showered with ash and had to leave after the wind chage blew smoke towards them.
The CFA said no evacuations of houses or businesses were ordered.
