CRANBOURNE North residents have received an offer that sounds too good to refuse: a local bank branch with a portion of the profits going back to their own community.
The Carrum Downs Community Bank is surveying residents and businesses around Cranbourne North to see how much support there is for opening a satellite branch in the area.
Bank president Greg Sugars said they were looking at two locations: the Thompson Parkway shopping centre and the Marriott Waters shopping centre, now under construction.
He said community banks could help to build a sense of community in new suburbs and estates by supporting local sports clubs and other organisations.
The Carrum Downs' community bank has returned $1.2million to the community since it started 12 years ago after the National Bank pulled out of the local shopping centre.
Mr Sugars said Carrum Downs was already doing a lot of sponsorships in the Cranbourne and Skye area because Carrum Downs had limited community groups needing support.
"We felt the next logical step was to look for a nearby locality that was lacking bank services. Cranbourne North has ATMs but no branches.
"People in the new housing estates don't want to drive into Cranbourne to do their banking.
"It's really a traditional banking service but instead of the money going back to a corporation it goes to the community.
The Carrum Downs Community Bank has a community meeting at Cranbourne Golf Club from 7-8.30pm on February 15 to inform Cranbourne community groups about the next steps and the support available from the bank.
Groups attending will go into a draw for a $1000 bank account.
